    I don't recall the length of Midway's runways (long time ago) but having flow into them many times and having seen Habu take off a few times, I'm a little surprised it was enough. Hopefully V1 comes before abort, because I'm sure there is no margin.

      That would have been so neat to see one of the planes fly in real life. Also never knew the SR-71 had the nickname Habu. How did you get the opportunity to see them fly?

      @@OceanLlamaMedia I was deployed to Kadena AFB in Okinawa in 81 & 83, and the SR-71 operated out of there. It taxied past our hangar often and took off in clear view of us. Habu is the local name for a long skinny black venomous snake, so naturally that is what the locals called the plane, and the servicemen quickly adopted the name.

    I got the TL60 for a shoot and I was impressed with it I bought a 2nd one. The app isn't the greatest it definitely has some quirks. Compared to some apps from other chines manufacturers this one isn't as bad. I like these lights. I thought about picking up the TL120 but it wasn't available when I was buying my 2nd one. Thanks! I used the TL120 on a real job last week and was deffinitly impressed with it. Was shooting some exercise videos and sometimes when the people are doing this like a pushup there faces are really dark as lightpanels and other lights are really hard to get right on the ground. I was able to put this lite about an inch above the ground using a c stand and magic arm on the end of the stand and lit up the persons face perfectly....or at least way better than I've been able to before. The TL60 deffinitly seems like it would help out with some shoots. I'll probably pick one of those up as well but will wait till I actually need it. Thanks for the comment! Also when I looked for this light on amazon again it didn't even show up. I assume they have limited stock.

      It's understandable that this generation doesn't know that much about actual chemical developed film motion photography, much like not knowing how a rotary dial telephone functions. Also. The movie industry still uses film which needs chemical processing in various movie productions. The film after chemical development is then digitally scanned so as to transfer for movie theater presentation, or DVD sales. Film is still used in some movies or certain scenes because of the visual ambience that only film can re-create. Digital can be to sterile in being to precise in image re-creation.

    Echoing your article, the recordings are just incomparable to the naked eye in totality. I made the mistake for years trying to capture unique moments like this, until an old timer pointed out that I was experiencing those moments the same way the people that stayed home did.. through my lens. I started leaving my slrs at home and just carried a pocket cam for quick snaps. The memories are so much more vivid. That said, this is a great recording, thank you for sharing it.

    • @OceanLlamaMedia
      @OceanLlamaMedia 2 місяці тому

      haha that old timer is right. I've been in so many situations that almost no one gets to experience and afterwards people sometimes ask how it was and I'm like "I dunno, I was looking through a viewfinder....or at most a 5 inch screen". It's really neat to get to go see things (and sometimes get paid to) that few people get to see but at the same time...yeah you're only partially there. Back in 2013 I think I was recording something for the Kentucky Derby and was right behind the guard rails next to the finish line on the track...I was actually crouching down on the tracks sand as the horses crossed the finish line maybe 10 feet away from me and was thinking "man I bet so many people couldn't even imagine being in this situation." but yeah I was mostly watching it through a camera =). If you don't really love making videos or taking photos and editing them...then for sure leave the high end stuff at home and use your phone. That's the same advice I told my wife on our honeymoon. Unless you're top priority is to capture video or photos only bring your phone.

      @@OceanLlamaMedia: Yeah, don't worry about getting every little thing perfectly. Just edit out the rough spots and call it good. About the only better thing you can do is use a tracker and perfect your initial Framing and zoom. It's way too hard to track it manually all the time. I wouldn't expect that from anyone! Oh yeah, and that's another expense that I didn't have the money for yet. Once I start thinking I'm going to be spending thousands of dollars on something like this then it sort of isn't worth it to me anymore, especially after I've already been to and seen 4 eclipses: two of them total and two of them annular; all 4 central. Maybe with the way I am about money, what I have seen and followed and videoed, plus what other people have done better than I could, is probably good enough for me. But on the other hand, I really want to be satisfied that I could get some really good, solid, clean shots! So I'm kind of on the fence about it for now. And I'm not saying that just to help console you. I have the hardest time setting up cameras on telescopes with the right filters and settings and stuff when the cameras and telescopes aren't really that pro, especially with no detachable lenses on my cameras, that I would say that even though I got something that was maybe a little bit satisfactory, what you got here still seems to be quite good in comparison!

I didn't take into account how quickly the earth rotates so hopefully others learned from my mistakes. I brought out a star tracker for yesterday's eclipse (2024) and actually got the alignment pretty darn close to perfect, especially surprising considering I set it up during the day. I think I did better than in 2017 but we'll see. on 3 of the cameras I think I only captured the last 30 seconds of the eclipse because I forgot to take the filters off those until the end. So much going on in the moment that you just forget stuff.

That imparted kind of a green tint to the one or two photos that I thought were worth keeping. At one point if someone their did let me borrow their solar glasses for a minute, which I used to look but don't recollect that I got any good photos with. So then for the total one of 2017 I just tried to hook a camera to a spotting scope -- a mini-telescope, I guess -- just for totality, and that was next to impossible to get right with only the scope on a tripod and the camera just handheld, so I gave that up: and I was too stupid to think I needed to practice it for a while beforehand. But I think I got a few OK shots with just the still mode of my zoomer camcorder during partial and when I took the glasses off it for total, but still not satisfied that they're good enough. Then for last year's annular eclipse I was still too stupid to think that there might be any telescopes that I could afford (I thought that any decent ones were all at least a few hundred dollars, and it never occurred to me to just look and see if I was wrong), as I was still struggling with funds at the time, I just went to that one with the idea that maybe somebody else would be there with their telescope and let me borrow it for a peek or two (eyes and then camera). There was someone there with one of the beginner telescopes, but she had her phone hooked up to it with this adapter, but little did I know how hard even those things are to set up right. So she didn't want to take it off and let me peek. But that's understandable! But I could see the shots she was getting with her phone, and the best shots that I got with any of my cameras were pretty crappy. But she sent me some of hers. However, as nice as that was of her, of course I was still not satisfied and wanted to get my own good ones. She told me that that telescope only cost her about $65 on a special sale, and that even without a special sale they would only be about $85. I wowed in disbelief! So come this total eclipse here in 2024, I was somewhat more prepared, with not just one, but two of those telescopes and filters, one of which I tried to adapt to a phone using the supplied adapter, and the other of which I tried adapting to a somewhat pro point-and-shoot camera (yeah, I realize that's somewhat of an oxymoron), also using its phone adapter. One type of filter gives the sunlight that same sort of orange as the glasses do, while the other kind maintains the white-light look but is kind of ripply until it gets warm, so it's harder to get clean images through. I was able to use one of the phone adapters for that other camera for things that don't need a solar filter, but silly me, I didn't realize how much extra practicing I might need just with the filter, so I was slothful and didn't use enough of my time between purchase and "GO time" wisely for that. I only tried it a little a few days before by precalibrating my finder scopes and then taping a solar glasses lens to each one, but then I didn't know that the reflectivity of the filters on the telescopes would come back and reflect bits of the camera into the picture, and I had not given myself enough time to figure out how to fix that problem! DUHH, OOPS! With a solar filter on, those phone adapters are still too sloppy! And I didn't think in time to ask that lady from October 23 annular how she fixed that problem, but even her photos and videos had some kind of haze around the sun. And that was just with the phone. As for the other camera, things were so hard to align while I was practicing that, that I gave up on it. But I did use that and got some OK partial pics with it and then took the filter off and got some fairly good pictures of totality with it. And I used to my camera with the best built-in zoom and no telescope or filter, and got some OK video of totality with that. But still, I am not "TOTALly" (ha!) satisfied; only "PARTIALly" (ha!). But I still did see both partial and totality directly and with the telescope without a camera, so I'm happy that I did not just insist on doing this whole thing without any cameras. I'm more satisfied that I did indeed try and get a little success with the cameras than if I had not even tried at all. So having said all this, what I see that you have here still seems to be a good bit better than what I came up with! So over the next years until the one that I've heard is supposed to be in Spain, I'm going to be deciding to either try really hard to save up for an even better camera -- this time, with I really pro-quality detachable telephoto lens -- or decide that it just isn't really worth the cost of that plus the cost of travel to clear out there, when I still have a combo of my own OKish shots and can go back and look at other people's really good ones. Because even if I owned that extra nice camera I would probably mostly just use my point-and-shoot one and phone, because in most of my situations I get enough quality what's the more convenient cameras for the vast majority of photos that I care to shoot, and I'm not really good at getting around to selling things, ha. Oh and I also had not yet afforded myself one of those trackers. I may try to do that later. And never mind those things they talk about trying with the red and green shirts and the white sheet, etc. (though I did pack those shirts). I'm just lucky to get a few somewhat clean basic shots! Such is my life, I guess... but I'd still rather attempt my own preservation than just skip that altogether. -- Mike A. Christensen

      @@HelloKittyFanMan Oh my gosh I love this story! We rarely hear about all the ways we fail to capture something and just how hard it is to create something good. Would you mind if I eventually use your story on my website? My techniques may not have been a whole lot different than yours. I kind of winged everything and packed up gear the night before and made the solar filters when I arrived. I totally relate to capturing the reflection of the solar filter. The only reason I didn't get the reflection of the filter is because I've spent 1000's of hours recording for my day job and knew the filter would likely reflect the background unless you could block out most of the light that would scatter back into the lens from the ground....just like shooting through a window in a house. Speaking of telescopes I totally meant to bring some of my binoculars but just realized after reading your comment that I completely forgot to pack them. Oh well. =) Again there's just so much going on that you can only do a fraction of what you want.

I've gone back over it and tried making sure there are no errors in it, but if you still spot any then please let me know. Yeah, you're actually capturing the reflection of part of the _camera_ in the filter, and that raises the sleepiness of those phone adapters to a whole new level, and I didn't think in time to ask that lady how she sort of fixed it, and even hers still had some haziness around her sun image (not as bad as the crap I was getting with mine; which I just edited into that story up there). Oh yeah, it is just like trying to eliminate glare on a window, isn't it? Yeah, I watched videos about how to adjust the cameras properly and what little things to watch for to try to capture, but I was lucky to get just a few semi-clean shots of just the basics! Oh yeah, never mind all that stuff with the red and green shirts and the white sheet, etc., even though I did pack those shirts, ha!

    What you showed us actually IS how it looks in real life, even if what you think you're looking at is not how it looks in person. That was still your real life. Just because something's not in person when you show someone doesn't mean it's not real life. Conversely, just because something is in person doesn't mean it is real life. Were you looking at and recording something that's real during a time that was not just a fictional story? If so, then that's real life. It doesn't matter if the way we're seeing it isn't in person.

      True, the zoomed in shots of the eclipse kind of show you what the ring looks like but you miss all the subtle shades of blue around the ring....you also miss how cool the rest of the earth looks. If I had 5 chances to capture an eclipse I think I could get the experience roughly right. I'll eventually write up a new entry on my website that shares what I learned from 2017 and 2024. Maybe someone can take what I've learned and create a more true to life experience. Actually, I might be able to reach out to some camera manufacturers and see if they would be interested in flying me to one and seeing if I can actually show what seeing one in real life is like. I'm pretty sure I know how to give a pretty accurate representation after yesterday's eclipse.

I was actually just making a blog post and trying to do something with my footage from the 2017 solar eclipse because I sat on it for years and couldn't figure out what to do with it. I would never have picked this ciip out to post online by itself but I was also messing around with some ai program that takes "long form" content and cuts it up. I just wanted to see how the program works and get an idea of how soon ai is going to do most of the video editing. I thought this was one of a few good snippets the ai program pulled out and decided to post it as just a random highlight clip. Program is called Minvo.

      Nahh! I feel like if I weren't any of this for rewatching later, I would go away regretting it for a long time, because the memory of just seeing something fades quite a bit after a while! Of course there always seem to be some people who record these things, so at least we would have theirs to be able to look back on. But there's really just nothing quite like capturing it yourself and then looking back at it and knowing that you succeeded in getting those shots! But yeah, if your own shots just went to crap, there is a little comfort in knowing that these days plenty of other people get some pretty good ones that you can continue to enjoy! So I'm glad that not everyone thinks it would be best to just look at this, because if they did then we wouldn't have any of these great shots to look at down the road for a refresher.

      I'm so torn on this even now. Yeah I wish I saw the 2017 and 2024 eclipse with my own eyes the entire time instead of looking down at the cameras for ~ half of it. I also really enjoyed editing together this video and this reminded me of how neat it was to see the 2017 eclipse. I don't think there's a right or wrong answer on what to do. I shoot and edit for a living and really like making videos so its pretty neat to get to combine my hobbies along with seeing the eclipse. I totally get where you're coming from. No matter what you do the eclipse is a fleeting moment in time and is also bittersweet. It's so cool to see but you know the moment won't last and you're memory of it starts to fade as soon as it's over. They never last long enough.
